Thursday 10th April 12:15 am IST. Just 2 days to go until Manchester United travel to Bavaria to take on the mighty Bayern Munich in their own backyard. The Allianz Arena will be the stage of the second leg of this season's UEFA Champions League Quarter-Final. Both teams go into this game off of very different domestic outings. Bayern Munich gave up their 53 game unbeaten streak in the Bundesliga with a shock 1-0 loss to mid table Augsburg while David Moyes side brushed passed Newcastle United with a Juan Mata inspired 4-0 win at St James Park.
In the first leg of this quarter final, a shaky yet resiliant Manchester United held the defending champions to a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford. The first half was dominated possesion wise by the Bavarians but they could not break through the United defense. Left back Alexander Buttner was key to stopping Bayern as he filled in for the suspended Patrice Evra. 0-0 at half time.
United finally took the lead after Wayne Rooney's corner was headed home by Inter Milan bound captain Nemaja Vidic in the 57th minute. Bayern fought back & eventually scored the equaliser when substitute Mario Mandzukic directed a header towards midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger who smashed the ball into the roof of the net past David de Gea. He was later sent off after a second bookable offense late in the game for a foul on Wyane Rooney.
1-1 it finished on the night & Manchester United have a great chance of causing what would be, the biggest upset this season by knocking out the current holders. With van Persie injured & Wayne Rooney a doubt due to a toe injury, this game will surely define David Moyes, & indeed Manchester United's season.
If the weekend results are anything to go by, Manchester United can definately go through to the last 4. But Bayern will be wounded from domestic pains & will seek swift revenge against Man United. English teams do have a history of beating Bayern at home though recently. Man City came from 2-0 down to beat the Bavarians 3-2 in the group stages this season. United will have to play at their best to stand any chance of going through but Champions League matches such as this always seems to create a perfect stage for drama, action, season defining moments, & of course lots of goals!!!
Impossible task? Or history in the making... Whatever happens it will be a classic UEFA Champions League game.
COME ON UNITED!!!
